Hygiene

Dental hygiene treatment includes the professional cleaning of the teeth. This is usually called scaling and polishing. It is important to maintain a plaque-free mouth as plaque can cause decay and gum disease. We recommend regular visits to our hygienist who visits the practice 3 days a week and would be happy to advise you on the best ways to maintain a healthy mouth.

Oral Cancer Screening

Your dentist will carry out a full examination as part of your check-up. This means that the dentist will check all the important areas such as the tongue, palate etc. Smoking and alcohol consumption are major risk factors in the development of oral cancer, particularly when combined together. Our dentists can provide smoking cessation advice if you wish.

Gum Shields

A gum shield is a protective appliance that is custom made to shield the mouth and is usually worn in contact sports. An impression is taken of the teeth so that it fits you perfectly and is then comfortable to wear.

Night Guards

A night guard is a appliance worn by patients who have a tendency to grind their teeth. This is largely done at night when we are sleeping and can damage the teeth, as well as any restorations that have been placed. Symptoms may include joint pain/stiffness. Your dentist will take an impression of the teeth to provide you with a custom made guard (splint). These can be made for the upper or lower jaws and are usually made of medium-hard acrylic.
